Did you know it's only been 30 years since women were officially recognized as farmers in Australia? 🌾
It's hard to believe that up until 1994, the vital work women were doing on farms was often overlooked. This story highlights the importance of women stepping forward and claiming their rightful place in agriculture. 💪
While women now make up one-third of Australia's agricultural workforce, there's still a lot of work to be done—especially in leadership roles. The strides made by organizations like Australian Women in Agriculture are inspiring.
But the work doesn’t stop here—women continue to lead the way in agri-tech, innovation, and farm management, proving that there are no limits to what they can achieve. How can we make sure that their leadership and contributions are fully recognized and supported in the next 30 years?

Today as we celebrate Women’s Day, As CEO of AGDA I want to encourage Women in Agriculture to embrace the profound connection between our souls and the soil we nurture. The connection goes beyond the physical, it is spiritual and emotional defining and shaping who we are. So today, I make a simple call to action to play our role in growing the sector :
1. Embrace your role as changemakers - Your soul, your passion, your innovation - these are the seeds of transformation and inclusive growth;
2. Nurture the soil of opportunity. Seek out and create chances for growth, for yourself and for others;
3. Cultivate networks or support. just as plants thrive in diverse ecosystems, so we thrive when we support and uplift each other;
4. Be bold in your aspirations. Dream big, for yourselves and our sector. The future of agriculture is ours to shape,
5. Remember the soul-soil connection. Your passion and the earths potential are intertwined. Nurture both and watch the magic unfold.
Let us collectively cultivate a new and prosperous agricultural landscape, turning past challenges into fertile ground for future generations of women in this sector. Together, we are building a new chapter in agriculture - one of empowerment, innovation and sustainable, inclusive growth where women’s voices resonate across fields and boardrooms alike.
Have a blessed Women’s Day 💐💐🌾🚜
The power of people in your business: designing your role in a family business.
I'm really exciting to be presenting at Thriving Women on this topic. Often for people entering family businesses - whether it's your family or your spouse's family - our roles are pre-determined by society's expectations. But as agriculture changes and technology makes working from a home office easier, I think it's time that we build our roles within family business to suit us - not what society thinks! 💪💃
After all - if you are going to run your own business - why not make it work for you! 📠🖥️☎️

It’s inspiring to see women in agriculture take up leadership positions. From managing farms to leading agribusinesses, they’re not only shaping the future of farming but also leading conversations around sustainability, food security, and rural development.
Programs that provide education, mentorship, and access to critical resources are key to supporting women in this field. These initiatives help women grow their businesses while ensuring the agriculture industry thrives in a way that includes all voices. U.S. women farmers, check out these opportunities from USDA!

As an agronomist and the founder of Abuti Spinach, I am passionate about empowering small-scale farmers in Africa through innovative solutions. The recent call to action by Oxfam at the AU Summit highlights the importance of women leadership in agriculture, and I couldn't agree more. Women play a vital role in agriculture, making up a significant portion of the workforce, yet they often lack representation in decision-making positions. By promoting women's involvement in agriculture, we can tap into their valuable insights and expertise, driving growth and development in the sector. What do you think are some practical ways to increase women's participation in agricultural decision-making? 🌱💡👩[Collection]

SVP Global Biostatistics & Data Sciences @Boehringer Ingelheim | EFSPI | ASA | DISRUPT-DS | Psychologist & Statistician on a life-long quest, passionate about a healthier planet. Sawubona!
What a day at Boehringer Ingelheim's #MakingMoreHealthTogether convention! The standout moment for me was certainly getting the chance to meet Zubaida Bai. Her on-stage message was deeply moving. She emphasized that the world's most significant untapped capital is neither oil nor data, but #women! Her call to action was clear and direct: we need to invest in women's power, not as an act of charity, but as a strategic move. The change we need isn't in women, but in the system that surrounds them!
I also had the privilege of representing Boehringer Ingelheim on the #femaleentrepreneurship panel. Peter Bencsik brought us all together and initiated a great dialogue about the 'Why?' behind our focus on female #entrepreneurship. Knowing the numbers and facts, and understanding the importance of this topic for society is key to truly moving the needle. By championing female entrepreneurs, we are not only advancing gender equity but also encouraging innovation and strengthening our economies, thereby ensuring a healthier planet with more health for humans and animals. 💡 Alongside Irene Fialka, Nélia Pereira, and Jana op den Winkel, we shared our entrepreneurial journeys and discussed how we can support fellow changemakers. The room was buzzing with energy, and I am thankful for this enriching experience and the opportunity to contribute to others' success for a greater cause. 🙏
There were so many more inspiring presentations and conversations today. It's really hard to mention them all. But I also remind myself, "Be Inspired" is merely the first step. We must #BeBold and really work #together in order to "Get things done". 💪

“Empowering women isn’t just about fairness—it’s about ensuring the roots of agriculture grow deeper and stronger for future generations.” 🌾🌱
At the recent stakeholder dialogue on ‘𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀: 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀,’ led by Prof. Vidya Vemireddy under the aegis of #CenterforManagementinAgriculture (CMA), one message was clear—women are central to the future of agriculture. But are we prepared for this shift? And more importantly, are our systems and policies enabling women to step confidently into these roles?
Key takeaways from the discussion:
• 𝗥𝗲𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲: Women don’t have to choose between studying agriculture or any other subject. They can lead in any field.
• 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀: Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) must prioritize women’s safety across supply chains, including wholesalers and distributors.
• 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿: We need visible success stories to inspire future women leaders in agribusiness.
• 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗞𝗲𝘆: Cross industry-wide partnerships and ecosystem-building approaches will drive sustainable inclusion.
• 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: Solutions must be both, practical and scalable to ensure lasting impact.
• 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗶𝗮𝘀: Women often face pushback in DEI initiatives—especially as the only woman in the room. A cultural shift is vital.
• 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗢𝘄𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽: Addressing legal and cultural barriers is crucial for empowering women farmers.
• 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴: School-to-work transition programs and skill development initiatives can lay the foundation for success.
• 𝗕𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗼𝗺-𝗨𝗽 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵: Start small—from districts—and scale upward to create systemic impact.
𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀 🚀
☑️ Establish POSH (Prevention of Sexual Harassment) committees across the agribusiness value chain.
☑️ Promote mentorship and capacity-building workshops.
☑️ Advocate for policy changes that support land ownership for women.
☑️ Build school-to-work pipelines to create career-ready women professionals.
The road ahead is clear—the future is where women in agribusiness don’t just work the fields but also lead the boardrooms - 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙬𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙮 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙝𝙚𝙧? 🌾

The Women in Agriculture award celebrates exceptional women from every corner of the industry, from farmers to influencers. As more women become leaders in ag-related fields, it’s necessary to celebrate their contributions- as the award’s websites states, women are both on the ground as “the initiators and catalysts of sustainable food production around the globe”, and are “shaping agricultural dialogue” as journalists, writers, and more. They’re creating highly influential sustainable companies and farms, with a few examples present in the jury panel- just two are Sheila Zulu, an agronomist from Zambia, and Mathilde Brion, an agri-journalist from France.
Worldwide, agriculture relies on women. Of course, we have the kind of leaders celebrated by the Women in Agriculture award, but the fact is that up to 43% of the world’s farm workers are women, as are ⅔ of the world’s livestock keepers (CGIAR). Our ability to innovate and future-proof agriculture exists thanks to the solid foundation these women create. We wouldn’t have the time to innovate without their global participation.
With vertical farming, we’re trying to create a future where food security is the norm. For now, millions of women will ensure food makes it to our plates. Congratulations to the future winner of the 2024 Women in Agriculture Award (by the way, it isn’t too late to nominate any exceptional women you know)!
